It’s about to be a bad Earth Day in Montana if HB 188 passes and the Governor signs the bill. The bill would impose an annual registration fee of $250 on electric vehicle (EV) drivers in the state. For a state with only 1051 registered EVs, it is an unnecessary and unneeded hurdle for EV owners and will deter EV adoption.
Make your voice heard and say NO to extra EV taxes in Montana!
While EV drivers should pay their fair share for using the roads, $250 would be far more than what a dirty gas car driver currently pays for registration. In addition, EV drivers pay local electricity taxes, and plug-in hybrid EV drivers already pay gas taxes.
The state should not impose any additional fee that would be punitive to the point of disincentivizing the purchase of an EV or negating any fuel cost savings.
Furthermore, Montana should not look to EVs as a way to make up for the shortfall in transportation funding in the state coming from gas tax revenue, when the funding shortfall actually comes from all vehicles on the road becoming more fuel-efficient and the fact that the gas tax has not been indexed to inflation for more than two decades.
Say NO to extra EV taxes in Montana!!
Thank you!
