Stop the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission from halting EV adoption

It’s Drive Electric Earth Day! On the one hand, we’ve got some things to celebrate—the new Administration released the American Jobs Plan, which includes $174 billion for our electric transportation future. On the other hand, Louisiana is about to pump the brakes on the future adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).

The Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission, appointed by Governor Edwards, is attempting to stop warranty repairs at Tesla’s only service center in the state, which could force Tesla to shut down the location entirely. The Motor Vehicle Commission is misinterpreting the state law by claiming that Tesla should not be allowed to make these warranty repairs in Louisiana. Not only would this be horrible for Tesla EV drivers, but this would set a terrible precedent for any other EV-only manufacturer who wants to come to Louisiana to sell and service EVs—all in all, this hurts the EV consumer.

Tell the Governor to stop opposing EV adoption in Louisiana and to stop blocking warranty repairs at Tesla’s only service center in the state.

It’s frustrating enough that potential EV drivers in Louisiana:

Need to travel outside the state to purchase specific EVs, like Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid vehicles
Have extremely limited makes and models of EVs available on dealer lots for purchase
And now might have to travel outside the state to have their EV serviced.

Louisiana needs to prepare for more EV adoption, more EV service centers by EV-only manufacturers, which means more jobs, more competition, and more EVs.

Make your voice heard and tell the Governor to stop blocking warranty repairs at Tesla’s only service center in the state.

I’m writing to you to urge you to stop the Motor Vehicle Commission from blocking the ability of Tesla, an EV-only manufacturer, to perform warranty repairs on their vehicles. This is extremely detrimental to the EV consumer and could set a terrible precedent that Louisiana is not a state that welcomes EV innovation. Louisiana EV drivers already have to travel outside the state to purchase specific EVs, like those from Rivian, Lucid, Tesla, and Arrival, because our state has restricted the direct sale of these vehicles by EV-only manufacturers. This restriction is opposed to free-market principles. For our state to now require that EV drivers need to go outside the state to have their EV serviced would slow down EV adoption and be a severe barrier to further EV adoption. The activity of the Motor Vehicle Commission is completely opposite to the Executive Order you issued calling on our state to address the climate crisis. Shifting to electric transportation is one of the ways we will achieve the carbon reduction goals you proposed. I encourage you to stop the Motor Vehicle Commission from slowing this adoption of EVs by blocking the ability of Tesla to perform warranty repairs on their vehicles. I urge you to stop hurting EV consumers. Thank you.
