Tell your US senator: We need an expanded federal EV tax credit!
A federal EV tax credit has been integral to stimulating EV sales by reducing the difference in total price by up to $7500 compared to gas-powered vehicles. We have the opportunity to both rapidly reduce the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions and increase the sales of electric vehicles by extending the federal EV tax credit in the upcoming Senate spending bill.
Why is this so important?
To combat climate change rapidly and effectively, a key solution is to electrify our transportation system. Including an expanded EV tax credit in the budget reconciliation bill will help to ensure that everyone can take part in the EV transition. EVs are much cheaper to operate than gasoline vehicles on a day-to-day basis but the upfront cost of purchasing an EV is a barrier to many. The EV credit seeks to minimize this financial hurdle by granting up to $7500 in tax credits for plug-in vehicles. The EV credit in its current form is tied to each manufacturer’s total EV sales and expires after an automaker sells 200,000 EVs. A revised EV tax credit should raise this manufacturer's sales cap so that all automakers can fully participate in the EV transition so more consumers can reap its benefit. For equity, climate, and clean air, we need a revised and expanded EV tax credit!
